When to Boost Your Staff with Consulting Help

Many CIOs and Directors have faced an identical dilemma: “How do I install a new HIS with my current staff so busy? And if I choose to use consultants, how do I utilize them?”

The best answer is, "Use consulting help where you will get the most benefit."  Each site is different, and before coming up with the right answer, you have to figure out your most pressing needs. When it comes down to it, you have TWO options for how to use your consulting dollars:

Option 1: Utilize consultants for their skills and expertise in implementing projects, focusing on their knowledge of a particular application. Bring them in to make sure your new project stays on track and is built to allow you to make the most of your new system.

Option 2: Use your OWN people to learn and build the new system. Insert consultants to take over the daily support of the legacy system while your trusted staff obtains all the new knowledge. After all, it's your staff that will need to be the experts after activation. Don’t allow them to get behind the 8 ball.

Assigning your staff to build a new system yet failing to free them from day-to-day support, can cause frustrations.  Some of your staff may prefer the comfort of supporting your existing system, occupying their time with old duties and never jump fully into the new system.  Be cautious of this.   As you plan your next project, please consider both options - Atlanticon is very willing to help with either one.
